A gloomy afternoon for Clitheroe rugby watchers as the 1st XV's four game winning streak came to a stuttering stop at an overcast Silcock Park.
This was a postponed game from just 7 days previous, but the available pool of players for the selectors was a pale comparison from then. So the net was cast a bit wider to bring in some promising 'youngsters' from the wider playing squad. In came Stuart Hulse, Sam Cheeseman, Austin Wensley and Kirk Kenyon into the starting 15. Ryan Devine, Stewart Taylorson and James Dennis came in on the reps bench.
Ormskirk were quickest out of the blocks with a try after just 10 minutes; however Clitheroe replied in kind sending Austin Wensley over in the corner for a decent score. 5-5.
Once again the visitors put the pressure on and were over to double their score.5-10
Tit for tat scoring was the order of the day - as Clitheroe got a head of steam up leading to Ed Sinclair twisting and turning to dot down under the crossbar. Adam Spencer couldn't miss with the extras and the maroons took the lead. 12-10.
The lead was short-lived as 'Kirk came back with a converted try to put them 12-17 up at the break.
A good start to the second half saw Clitheroe in for their third courtesy of a bullocking close range charge from Ryan Devine to level up the scores. 17-17
Of course the visitors replied immediately with a try to retake the lead and followed it up with a penalty to extend it 17-25.
Clitheroe's reply with another Spencer penalty was not enough 20-25 and Ormskirk saw the game out without further drama.
So one to forget perhaps for the home support. Both teams may have been short of front line players but the visitors made a better fist of it in the final reckoning.
A trip to Orrell awaits this Saturday , always a tough outfit on their home paddock. Roll up the sleeves lads and dig in.
