With the bus booked & a few bored souls found willing to support and with a full fifteen willing to pull on a shirt.... we were off.
The wind was howling and the rain circling in off the bay and Barrow in Furness can be described as not the warmest place in Northern England.
Within minutes of the kick off was to set the game with the park 10 darting through to dot down under the sticks, Hawcoats first of many of the day with a full time score of 48-0 to the home team you may think there were no positives to report .
The score line in parts flattered the hosts. The maroon pack dominant for nearly the entire game. The experience of John Pundy Procter and Roger Holmes in the front row was to help give the debutantes ; the Waltons ,[not of TV fame] Aiden ,Mathew and Nathan the confidence to have a go in all areas of the park getting stuck in and running hard.
Sam 'the Rev' Cheeseman showed his versatility - moving with ease across the back line allowing Dan Smudger Smith to slip into the 9 role for a stint to blow the cobwebs off. The latent talent that is Dan Wallbank moved from flanker to centre. Where some blistering runs, linking beautifully with Matt Bleasdale, could well be a new string to his bow , as he looks comfortable with ball in hand stepping defenders .
Yet more young talent debuted for the maroons in Frenchman, Bruno Besbas out on the wing. Not the biggest of men - but don't be fooled fast of foot and fearless in the tackle.
There was strong running from the likes of Jamie Taylor or maybe it was David Ginola with the long flowing locks, and the usual bullocking carries from Pete ' I am not getting carded this week' Farnsworth.
The fact the maroons could not cross the whitewash in a game in which they were more than competitive just shows you sometimes need a little luck.
But with a bus trip home spirits were high and John Pundy Proctor entertaining the masses on the karaoke (who knew) and much to the delight of the ladies of the entourage Murray was more suitably dressed than when wearing his snug fit shirt , & it was on to the first stop of the trip but that's another tale .
Huge thank you to the travelling support you may be few but it is always appreciated win or lose.
So have a merry Christmas and a happy new year and we will see you all on the 4th of Jan for the trip to Fylde.
