Past Players Lunch a good do -official. Thornton too hot to handle

Another top afternoon at Silcock Park

Wednesday, 18 October 2023By Roger Holmes

The Annual Past Players Lunch was held last Saturday. This time as well as taking in the 1st XV hosting Thornton Cleveleys RFC, it was RWC quarter final weekend.

Top of the table Thornton proved their high flying credentials at Silcock Park, proving to be too hot to handle.
Although Clitheroe took an early lead from a well taken Tom Walton try plus a Jack Stanley penalty; it was short lived as at half time the visitors led 8-12.
The start if the second half was a disaster for the home team giving away a stream of penalties which the Thornton kicker was too happy to convert. The visitors pulled away and although Clitheroe kept battling manfully , exemplified by a late Nathon Burns try, the opposition were too slick on this occasion. No easy games in this league.
We go again this week, this time travelling to Dukinfield RFC.

The Past Players Lunch has developed into a highlight off the field for the old boys and a healthy turnout sat down for a great feed and drink.
Life Member ties were belatedly presented to Joe Holden - revisiting for the first time in ages, and to the man who started it all, with the famous 1977 advert in the local rag - Ashley Parkinson. Well done and thanks.
Also thanks to John Procter (and Mrs P!) for organising and donating the bingo prizes. A tidy sum gathered for charity.
After a short [thankfully] but emotional speech David Slinger proposed the toast to our Past Players who are sadly no longer with us. A nice touch.
In all an excellent afternoon of catching up, reminiscing and banter. Look forward to doing it again.
